Project G80: The NV Performance S1000 M3 Makes Its Debut
A few months after collecting our project BMW G80 M3, the time finally arrived to see what the car could deliver on the track.
From the day we collected it, we had ambitious plans for the S58 platform.
Our objective was to develop a complete performance package using carefully selected hardware, professional calibration and extensive real-world testing.
That development process led to the creation of the NV Performance S1000 package.
Developing the S1000 Package
A complete performance package requires much more than fitting a selection of aftermarket parts.
Every component must be researched, selected and tested to ensure that it works effectively with the rest of the vehicle.
Our development process focused on creating a balanced package in which the turbochargers, engine hardware, fuelling components, transmission and calibration could operate together correctly.
As with all major NV Performance packages, we tested the S1000 package on our own development vehicle before offering it to our clients.
This allowed us to identify potential issues, collect real-world data and refine the setup without using a client’s vehicle as a test platform.
Learning the S58 Platform
The S58 represented a new stage in our BMW development programme.
Although our team already had extensive experience with high-performance BMW engines, every platform introduces different technical requirements and learning opportunities.
Our partners at 5150 Autosport provided valuable support throughout the project. Their existing experience with the S58 platform helped guide the development and selection of the engine components required for the build.
Once the installation was complete, the vehicle underwent a careful running-in and testing period.
During this stage, we monitored the car closely to ensure that every component was functioning correctly before progressing to more aggressive calibration and performance testing.
Calibration with GTP Tuned
Once we were satisfied with the mechanical operation of the vehicle, we began the tuning process with our calibration partners in the United States, GTP Tuned.
NV Performance is the official South African agent for GTP Tuned calibrations.
Their knowledge of the S58 platform played an essential role in refining the vehicle and ensuring that the software worked correctly with the S1000 hardware package.
Accurate calibration is one of the most important elements of any high-performance build. It brings the mechanical components together and allows the vehicle to deliver its power effectively, consistently and safely.
Testing the Car at the Coast
With a coastal racing event approaching, we took the G80 M3 to the coast for further testing and tuning.
While we were there, we decided to run the car at a racetrack for the first time.
The vehicle remained in complete street trim. It retained its full factory weight, complete interior and normal road-going configuration.
There was no stripped interior or dedicated lightweight race setup. The car was tested exactly as a true high-performance street BMW should be.
Record-Breaking Results on Its First Outing
The performance of the S1000 G80 M3 exceeded our expectations.
On its first outing, the car claimed the title of the fastest BMW M3 in South Africa.
It also became the fastest street-trim BMW in South Africa at the time.
The result placed our S1000 G80 M3 among the quickest S58-powered vehicles internationally. At that stage of its development, it ranked as the 14th-fastest S58 in the world and the third-fastest hybrid-turbo S58 recorded globally.
Achieving these results during the car’s first track outing demonstrated the potential of both the S58 platform and the newly developed S1000 package.
Built on the Road, Proven on the Track
This project represents the NV Performance approach to vehicle development.
We research the platform, install carefully selected components, complete the necessary running-in period and test the package under real-world conditions.
Only once we are satisfied with the results do we make the package available to our clients.
The first outing was only the beginning for the G80 M3.
Further testing, calibration and development were already planned as we continued working towards an even greater objective:
A full-weight, street-trim, eight-second BMW M3.
Keep an eye on the NV Performance platforms for a detailed breakdown of the vehicle, its modifications and the next stage of the Project G80 journey.
