We Tuned Our First G80 M3

Taking Our S58 Development to the Next Level

Our development journey with BMW’s S58 platform has officially reached another major milestone: custom-tuning our first BMW G80 M3.

We had previously worked on several G80 and G82 models using the JB4 platform, but this project gave us the opportunity to take things considerably further.

Unlocking the ECU

BMW vehicles manufactured after June 2020 are equipped with locked engine control units. Before custom ECU tuning can take place, the ECU must first be professionally unlocked.

We carefully removed the ECU and arranged for it to be securely shipped to Finland, where the specialist unlocking process was completed. The entire process took approximately two weeks.

Needless to say, we were extremely excited when the ECU returned and we could finally begin tuning the vehicle.

Preparing the G80 M3

While we waited for the ECU, our partners prepared the vehicle with a selection of carefully chosen supporting upgrades.

Strada Performance installed a complete Valvetronic exhaust system, completely transforming the character and sound of the M3.

The team at The 357 then fitted Project Gamma front-mount intakes and a flex-fuel kit, giving us the supporting hardware required to maximise the potential of the S58 platform.

With the upgrades installed and the unlocked ECU safely back in the vehicle, we began custom-tuning the G80 M3 through the bootmod3 platform.

A Completely Different Beast

The results were incredible.

The G80 had been transformed into an entirely different machine. It delivered power from virtually any RPM, in any gear, with relentless acceleration that pushed you firmly back into your seat.

This was not simply an improvement in peak power. The entire driving experience had changed. Throttle response, mid-range performance and power delivery were significantly more aggressive, while still retaining the road manners expected from a modern BMW M car.

We also flashed the transmission using xHP software to help the gearbox manage the additional power and deliver quicker, more precise gear changes.

A 10.1-Second Street Car in Johannesburg

In full street trim, the G80 M3 recorded an impressive 10.1-second quarter-mile run on the streets of Johannesburg.

Take a moment to consider what that means: this is a comfortable, fully usable street car capable of producing a low 10-second pass at altitude, on demand.

With the benefit of coastal air and further development, the potential for a nine-second pass was clear—even with relatively minimal modifications.

The Future of the G80 M3

The G-Series M3 and M4 have proven that they are serious contenders, both on the street and at the drag strip. The S58 platform offers exceptional tuning potential, and this project gave us an exciting glimpse of what lies ahead.

This was only the beginning of our development journey.
